How Zendaya’s Oakland Teachers Helped Shape Her Path

How Zendaya’s Oakland Teachers Helped Shape Her Path

Zendaya’s rise in film and television looks effortless today, but her story began in classrooms and community arts studios in Oakland. Long before she became a global figure, she was a student surrounded by teachers who pushed her to take risks, refine her craft, and trust her instincts. Her journey is a clear example of how one mentor can significantly impact a student’s life.

Oakland School for the Arts and the Culture That Shaped Her

Zendaya often credits Oakland School for the Arts (OSA) with shaping her discipline and outlook. The school is known for valuing craft, collaboration, and professionalism. As OSA explains:

“We try to make it clear that we don’t produce stars. We produce professionals who are going to make whatever workplace they enter all that much better by bringing their artistic education to it.”

This approach influenced Zendaya during her formative years. “I remember when I was younger I would always go up to my mom’s school, I would go to the younger grades and try to help those teachers because they often had big classes with a lot of kids and it’s sometimes hard to cater to every kids’ needs. I remember there was a girl younger than me, I helped teach her the alphabet and to me that was so cool to be a part of her learning experience. Otherwise that kid would have been left behind because all the other kids were ahead. So I got to help and do that and that was really inspiring to me!” she said in an interview.

Mentors Who Saw Her Strengths Early

Acting coaches and teachers at OSA helped Zendaya understand her own potential. They taught her how to make deliberate choices, guided her through performances, and encouraged her to maintain high standards in every role. Those lessons shaped her acting, confidence and leadership skills.

In an interview, she said: “Teachers are very important figures in society, despite being one of the least paid. They spend their lives dedicating themselves to helping young people learn about the world and life in general. If I weren’t in this business, I would have probably followed in their path.”

Her perspective reflects a deep respect for the adults who guide young people, often without public recognition.

Returning to Oakland to Inspire Students

Even after becoming a household name, Zendaya continues to stay connected to Oakland. During her visit to Fruitvale Elementary School, she spoke with students about learning, curiosity, and even STEM learning. Her presence made an immediate impression, but the bigger message was clear. She returned to honor the teachers and mentors who shaped her journey.

Students remember moments like these because they see someone who once sat in a classroom just like theirs and still speaks openly about the educators who helped her grow.

Teachers Are the Starting Point

Zendaya’s teachers did not predict her future success. They simply invested in her growth. That investment changed her path. Every student deserves that kind of support, whether their interests are in the arts, robotics, science, athletics, or digital media.

Behind every confident learner is a teacher who made room for curiosity and helped them see what they could become. Explore tools that help teachers spark curiosity through hands-on STEM.
