LocoHex Hexapod Robotics: AI, Mapping & Terrain Exploration

Hexapod robot LocoHex for STEM learning

LocoHex Hexapod Robotics: AI, Mapping & Terrain Exploration

From Mars rovers to disaster-response robots, hexapods are shaping the future of exploration. LocoHex brings that same power into your classroom.

With LocoHex, students get the opportunity to go beyond traditional robotics education and step into the shoes of real-world robotics engineers through lifelike motion and AI. Designed for grades 10–12, this six-legged, terrain-adaptive robot is a launchpad for exploration in robotics, AI, and environmental technology.

Why Hexapod Robotics Sparks Curiosity

Hexapods are an ideal platform for teaching mobility, stability, and autonomy. With six independently controlled legs and support for multiple gaits, students can experiment with movement algorithms, real-time balance, and inverse kinematics, key components in robotics engineering and research. Students are going beyond reading about algorithms in a textbook and watching their own code make the robot move.

Advanced Robotics in Action with LocoHex

SLAM Development and AI Applications

LocoHex helps students dive into advanced robotics concepts that scientists and engineers use in the field. Equipped with a 3D depth camera and LiDAR, LocoHex supports advanced robotics capabilities such as precise 2D mapping, multi-point navigation, TEB path planning, LiDAR tracking, and dynamic obstacle avoidance. Students can also use 3D vision to capture point cloud images of their surroundings, enabling RTAB 3D mapping and navigation, a cornerstone of modern robotics research.

Exploring Motion Through Inverse Kinematics

LocoHex’s inverse kinematics algorithm lets students experiment with a variety of gaits, including tripod and ripple, while exploring concepts like stability, directional control, and stride. It can even simulate “moonwalking” at a fixed speed and height. With adjustable pitch, direction, roll, speed, and stride, along with a self-balancing function, LocoHex can traverse complex terrains with agility, mirroring real-world exploration robots.

LocoHex allows students to go beyond basic robotics and dive into:

  • AI-based terrain mapping
  • Deep learning model training
  • Sensor fusion and autonomous navigation

With integrated LiDAR and depth cameras, students can develop robotics applications for real-world environments such as agricultural mapping,  search-and-rescue navigation, and planetary exploration.  It’s robotics that looks and feels alive, making every experiment an engaging challenge.

A Playground for Exploration

Built with open-source flexibility in mind, LocoHex encourages students to explore and iterate. The platform supports:

  • Additional sensor integration
  • Autonomous task automation
  • AI vision applications
  • Experimental gait programming

This hands-on, project-based experience prepares students for real robotics research, engineering careers, and higher education pathways in AI,  computer science, and mechatronics. Every project is a chance to push boundaries and build something new.

Curriculum That Meets Students Where They Are

LocoHex comes with a curriculum that grows with students. Whether your students are just beginning to explore robotic movement or are ready to code neural networks for decision-making, LocoHex’s all-in-one STEM robotics kit offers:

  • Scaffolded lesson plans
  • Advanced coding challenges
  • Real-world projects and applications
  • Guided support and teacher training

The robotics curriculum is designed to build from foundational programming and motion control into higher-order skills like terrain analysis, autonomous navigation, and robot perception.

Bringing Real-World Missions Into the Classroom

Picture a lesson where students simulate a Mars rover exploring a crater or design an algorithm to help a robot analyze farmland. With LocoHex, robotics goes from abstract coding challenges to purposeful, real-world problem solving.

LocoHex makes robotics exciting, hands-on, and deeply relevant, connecting classroom learning and real engineering challenges. Explore how LocoHex brings terrain exploration, AI, and mobility to your robotics program.
