The Educator of the Month for July 2025 – Paul Barker

We are proud to recognize Paul Barker, Computer Science teacher at The Buckley School, as our July 2025 Educator of the Month. With a steadfast belief that “teaching is the best place to make a difference in society,” Paul has dedicated his career to helping students explore STEM through hands-on learning and drone coding.

Paul’s Journey in Education: Teaching with Purpose

Paul knew early on that he wanted to make a difference, and saw education as the path to do that. “I really wanted to make a difference in society and learned early in life that teaching was the best place to accomplish that goal.” That mission continues to guide his work in the classroom, where he fosters curiosity and confidence in students in both Lower School and Upper School.

Challenges: Expanding Access and Engagement

Paul has encountered some persistent challenges when it comes to engaging all students equally in STEM. “We are still trying to get females interested in STEM. The fight against social media and peer pressure is proving to be quite a challenge.” His solution? “Find more information about female educators in STEAM and have them be role models.”

For Paul, the biggest hurdle is sparking student interest. “I don’t feel like there is any outward challenge, it is just difficult to get students excited about learning.”

Implementation: Drones in Every Division

As the driving force behind LocoRobo integration at The Buckley School, Paul led the rollout independently. “I was the sole actor. I added it to my middle school classes and my Lower School classes. I spent a whole day getting the drones to work and planned how to use them in each grade and at what time of year to introduce them.”

Impact: More Students Choosing STEM

The results have been clear: more students are showing interest in Paul’s classes. “I have seen growth in my Upper School and Middle School classes. More students are enrolling in my electives as the history of the tech is making the decision for them.”

Even more importantly, the STEM program is helping students clarify their interests and encouraging STEM career exploration. “Most students walk away from the class knowing if they want to pursue computer science or not. This helps in our retention of students and scheduling our classes. I really enjoy reaching the students early and giving them that head start.”

Aha Moments: The Power of the Flip Block

Paul shared a recurring moment that continues to captivate his students every year: “Every time a drone does the flip block is a moment of excitement that is unparalleled in education.” These spontaneous reactions capture the joy and discovery at the heart of hands-on STEM learning and the reason Paul continues to bring drone education into the classroom.

Paul’s vision, initiative, and passion for engaging students reflect the very best of what it means to be a STEM educator. We are honored to recognize Paul Barker as our July 2025 Educator of the Month.
